Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins… ESV Acts 2:38
We had the awesome opportunity to witness a baptism at Life Church Baltimore last night. Today in our services we will have a baptism as well. Perhaps nothing thrills me more than seeing people commit to following the Lord Jesus through believer’s baptism. When the Holy Spirit work in a life to draw someone to Himself, the result is nothing more than miraculous. The man last night is actually a postman. Life Church sent bulk mailers to their neighborhood, and as he was delivering them, they piqued his interest. He noted the times of the services, showed up, and God worked in His life to draw him to Himself. The young man who will be baptized in our services today has a unique story as well.
Baptism symbolizes the washing away of our sins as our old self is buried with Christ and our new self is raised in life with Him. Salvation can be hard to grasp, but at it’s essence, it involves death to our old ways and new life in Jesus. As we embrace Christ’s death for our sins (and the forgiveness that comes from that) we find great freedom, life, love and joy. Witnessing others as they experience this life further deepens our own life and joy.
My prayer for you is two-fold. First, if you haven’t been baptized in the name of Christ, may you consider it. Have you considered the weight of your sin and the possibility of forgiveness in Christ? Have you considered giving up living for self, and embracing living for Christ in His power and strength? Secondly, if you have been baptized, are you actively recruiting others to this life? Are you rejoicing in their baptisms? Are you leading others to experience the life you have found? Let’s encourage others to follow Jesus so that all may enjoy the life He so freely offers.
