Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” ESV Genesis 2:18
I love watching healthy married people interact. They are usually complete opposites, yet have learned their “opposition” is their greatest strength. As my dad so often says, if the two of you were exactly alike, one of you isn’t needed. As such, we need to see the differences in our spouses as strengths rather than weaknesses.
God called Adam to care for the earth, rule over it and subdue it. When Adam didn’t find a suitable helper, God made one fit for him. This indicates God studied Adam’s strengths and weaknesses and created Eve to be a perfect fit for Adam. Unfortunately in our sinful, self-centered nature, we see each other’s differences as threatening and destructive rather than the strength they really are. Realize God gave you your spouse to balance you and keep you straight. Praise Him for their differences. Not matter how challenging it may be, those differences complete the two of you. (Also realize you probably aren’t that easy to live with either!).
May you enjoy your spouse this week, especially their differences. As you come to praise God for their differences, you will be amazed at the depth and wonder of your marriage.
