Life With Your Wife

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. ESV Ecclesiastes 9:9

We often see stories of how troublesome marriage is, and to be sure, all marriages have tough days. However, in the verse above, Solomon encourages us to “enjoy life with the wife whom you love…” Have you ever considered that enjoying married life is a form of spiritual formation? By enjoying our marriage, we are fulfilling a command of Scripture.

As my wife and I collapsed on the couch tonight after a long day of work, kids, growth group, adoption stuff and house cleaning, we had some homemade strawberry shortcake (with fresh strawberries the kids picked this afternoon) and then we indulged in our nightly Netflix fix. While this may not seem spiritual, I fully enjoyed it, which means I’m doing exactly what Solomon commands. We often think of spiritual formation as a great challenge…something we will forever struggle with. To be sure, certain aspects are challenging. However, we must never forget we serve a great God overflowing with grace and mercy. Hence, some aspects of Spiritual formation are truly enjoyable and empowering…such as enjoying strawberries and Netflix with the wife whom I love.

Be encouraged. Marriage can be tough and we will touch on the tough days in another post. However, some days are great, and they too are a part of our spiritual journey. On these days take a moment to thank God for His grace and mercy in your life and enjoy the process of spiritual development.
