I’m a starter…and last night I started yet another thing: introducing the catechism to my children. The first one goes like this: “What is the chief end of man? The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” It was fun to teach this to my kids and help them work through it. The response here is basically two-fold: glorify and enjoy. The interesting part is that while I’ve thought I’ve understood the “glorify” part, I’ve never paid attention to the “enjoy” part. I think God used the time last night to confirm to me what John Piper and so many others have been proclaiming: God is glorified when we are enjoying Him! Because of my legalistic background, I have focused for so long on doing what is right, and that leads to being consumed with holiness and the pursuit thereof (which can be a good thing). However, if we fail to realize the true enjoyment that comes from glorifying God, we fail to truly taste of the goodness of the Lord Jesus. Glorifying God is not a task to suffer under, but rather an enjoyable adventure to be lived out. I don’t feel I’m expressing it clearly here now, but it’s definitely something to think about.
